Badhaka as a Tool

As per Parashar, the concept of "Badhaka houses" is related to Rashi dasha which later,I think,was extended to Nakshatra dasha mainly to Vimshottari dasha by others. However, there is a very clear logic in this concept as adopted by Parashar.Let us first understand what are badhaka houses. Although in BPHS, Badhaka houses are mentioned only for Moveable (Char) signs, yet it may be assumed that it would have been there for all three groups of signs and got omited  for (Fixed) Sthira and Dual(Dwiswabhava) signs over long run of time.As per the matter available in other classics, the complete definition is as under.

"The 11th house ,9thouse and 7th house are Badhaka places for the Moveable, fixed and dual signs respectively."

If from a Rashi dasha, Badhaka place is afflicted by malefics without any banefic association or aspect , dasha of such sign gives great tragedy,grief and confinement etc.See the 11th house is a house of gain, the 9th house is luck and the 7th house is also related to one's Karma being the 10th from the 10th house.So naturally affliction to these places is not conducive to beneficial results.Mrs Indira Gandhi was shot dead during her Char dasha of Leo sign.The 9th house (Aries sign) from Leo is aspected by Mars,Sun and Mercury. All these are malefics including Mercury which is associated with Sun in her horoscope.

According to Jataka Parijat

क्रमाच्चरागद्विशरीरभानामुपान्तयधर्मस्मरगास्तदीशः।

खरेशमांदिस्थितराशिनाथा ह्यतीव बाधकरस्वेचराः स्युः।।

         --- (Chapter-II,Shlok-48)

अर्थात् चर राशि से 11वीं, स्थिर राशि से 9वीं तथा द्विस्वभाव राशि से 7वीं राशि में स्थित ग्रह या उनके स्वामी ग्रह यदि खर राशि या मांदि स्थित राशि के स्वामी हों तो भावों के बाधक होते हैं।

लग्न से से 22वां द्रेष्काण खर कहलाता है।

meaning that in the case of moveable , immoveable and dual signs ,planets occupying respectively the 11th,9th and 7th from them or their Lords are Badhaka (troublesome) if they happen to own at the same time the houses occupied by the Lord of Khara or Mandi.

The 22nd dreshkon from the Lagn is called Khar.

What are the results that a Badhaka specifically is likely to give? According to Shlok- 30, chapter-18 of the same text:

बाधा स्थानपतद्युतग्रह दशा शोकादिरोगप्रदा

ताकेन्द्रस्थदशापहारसमये दुःख विदेशाटनम्।

अर्थात् बाधा स्थान के स्वामी या उससे युत ग्रह की दशा शोक,रोग आदि देने वाली होती है।बाधा स्थान से केंद्र भावों में स्थित ग्रह की दशा-अंतर्दशा कष्टप्रद एवं विदेश यात्रा कराने वाली होती है।

Meaning, tha dasha period of a planet owning a Badhaka places or combined with it leads to disease,distress and other such evils.During the Dasha and Bhukti of a planet occupying a Kendra from the Badhaka places, sorrow and foreign travel will be experienced.

If we closely look into the description of concept of badhaka ad described in BPHS, probably any house can suffer due to badhaka if the badhaka sign corresponding to that particular house is afflicted.In many affliction to badhakar sign due to aspect of malefic also have been found to tend the problem to the house concerned.Even affliction to trikon signs of badhaka places have been found trouble to the house concerned.

However, what must be understood is that Badhakar by himself does not generate adverse results.If the chart has basic afflictions and the Badhaka also focuses on them,the afflictions tend to get aggravated.

Although every chart has a badhaka as per its conceptual definition,yet every Badhaka can not be considered as Badhana unless specific malefic condtionds as described above exist in the chart.

Further ,even though the basic role of a Badhakar is subtle ,yet it can act as a catalyst or abettor of a basic affliction.So to that extent,it's role is limited and active only under certain circumstances in the birth chart.
